Advertised Summary Job Description

Reporting to the Manager of the Academic System Development & Administration team, the Sr. Application Systems Administrator will take ownership of operations and automation for the Academic Services team. This role entails system administration, maintenance, and implementation of automation running across multiple Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers, collaboration with developers and service specialists from multiple IT teams, and providing guidance to other system administrators on the team. The incumbent will assist in analysis, design, development, documentation, and ownership of software projects that directly support application developers from the Academic Services team, as well as the faculty and students of Columbia University.

CHARACTERISTIC DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Monitors services, investigating and fixing system issues, and ensuring system uptime.

  • Automates routine tasks via scripts written in Bash and Python.

  • Managing runbooks and guides of instructions for server operations.

  • Implements and maintains batch processing jobs written in Bash, Python, and Perl.

  • Supports incoming and outgoing data processing feeds for Academic Services team.

  • Deploys Python and Java applications to production environments.

  • Installs and configures new services on Red Hat Enterprise Linux servers.

  • Configures Puppet manifests to deliver software across multiple server roles.

  • Queries SQL databases to investigate system issues and audit transactions.

  • Provides guidance and direction to junior system administrators and developers.

  • Collaborates with other Columbia IT teams.

  • Documents new processes and procedures.

  • All other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications for Grade

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

  • Bachelor's degree and/or its equivalent required.

  • 4-6 years' related experience.

Additional Position-Specific Minimum Qualifications

Applicant MUST meet these minimum qualifications to be considered an applicant

  • Linux/Unix System administration skills.

  • Experience writing Bash and Python scripts.

  • Experience with relational databases and SQL.

  • Proficiency in managing version control systems, such as Git and Subversion.

  • Proficiency with continuous integration systems such as Jenkins CI.

  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills.

  • Demonstrated ability to work in a fast-paced, deadline driven environment.

  • Demonstrated excellence in a variety of competencies including teamwork/collaboration, analytical thinking, communication and influencing skills, and technical expertise.

  • Ability to work with changing priorities and with multiple projects.

  • Ability to be precise and attentive to detail is essential.

  • Ability to work with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to work weekend and off-hour work on occasion.

Special Instructions

Preferred Qualifications

  • RHEL certification, or similar training.

  • Knowledge of Puppet or similar configuration management tool.

  • Familiarity with monitoring and deploying Python and Java applications.

  • Familiarity with Atlassian software (i.e. Jira, Confluence).

  • Experience with learning management systems and portals.

  • Experience in IT service delivery in a complex higher education environment.

  • Experience with GitLab, GitHub, or equivalent version control hosting solutions.

  • Proficiency in managing Web application environments (Apache, Tomcat, etc.).

  • Understanding of DevOps culture and responsibilities within a technology organization.
