This is a great opportunity to join the rapidly growing Fiber Optics Division of Thorlabs, a leading company in the exciting Photonics industry. Engineers work within a team focused on product development with the expectation to work with limited guidance on complex engineering activities in a fast-paced environment and to simultaneously handle multiple projects. The ideal candidate will be an entrepreneurial, self-motivated individual who thrives in a fast-paced, creative environment. The Fiber Optics division oversees the development and production of all fiber optics related products, which includes optical fiber made of various materials, cables, and devices. This position is for a mid-level individual with an Engineering background. The ideal candidate will have direct experience in the product and process design of ruggedized fiber optic cables for industries ranging from research laboratories, medical and industrial applications. Hands on experience in such fields as fiber optics and laser optics are a plus.Essential Job Functions include the following, but are not limited to:Design cables and componentsSupport cable production for customer programsWrite and develop effective presentations for training or developing and incorporating solutions in line with changing technologiesDocuments project work and, at times, may lead projects and technical discussionsConnector polishing process developmentWorks with manufacturing on prototype unitsDevelops, monitors and maintains product development schedulesComplies with safety regulations and maintains clean and orderly work areasCollaborates with other departments on new product ideas utilizing the company forum.QualificationsExperience:5+ years of work experienceEducation:Bachelor's Degree in Engineering or other relevant technical major requiredSpecialized Knowledge and Skills:Fiber optic cable design, manufacture, and testingRuggedized/hermetic cable design for Aerospace/Military applicationsExperience in designing cabling for medical Applications a plusWorking knowledge SolidWorks 2D and 3D modeling softwareFamiliarity with Thermal Analysis and ability to apply to product designAbility to draft, read and understand mechanical machining printsFamiliarity with dimensional tolerances and inspection techniquesKnowledge of fiber optic device packaging a plusFamiliarity with Machine shop CNC and manual Milling and Turning a plusFiber optic handling, stripping, and cleavingExperience with testing equipment such as inspection microscopes, interferometers, and IL/RL metersFamiliarity with Mil-spec, IEC, and TIA/EIA test proceduresCustomer relationship managementProject Management skills with a deep sense of ownershipFlexibility; qualified candidates will be able to adapt to a variety of situations and projects as well as work in a fast paced environmentExperience with ISO standards for Medical Devices a plusThorlabs values its diverse environment and is proud to be an Equal Employment Opportunity/Affirmative Action Employer.
