As members of a High Reliability Organization (HRO), every employee should practice CHAMP behavior and strive to make patient safety a top priority. Performs complex technical duties associated with the drug distribution process and oversees the coordination of the completion of daily technical activities, to ensure the safe, accurate handling and dispensing of pharmaceuticals in the hospital.
Performs drug distribution activities including, accurate picking, packaging, and delivering medications for refillor load in automated dispensing cabinets (ADC), delivery and appropriate storage of intravenous,chemotherapy, and refrigerated medications to the patient care units, prioritization and timely delivery ofSTAT orders, Code 5 Carts, and other non-routine deliveries to ensure timely distribution of medications .Sets up, fills and completes assigned deliveries in established time frames and within acceptable error rate (2per month). Processes accurate patient charges and credits to ensure accuracy of the patient bill andcompliance with billing regulations. On each delivery, maintain and ensure that the ADC is clean, orderly,functional, and meets guidelines for safe drug storage. Notify pharmacy supervisor or PSM of any issuesrelated to drug storage that need follow-up.
Processes new medication orders (Loads) into the ADC console in an accurate and timely manner. Takesinto account par levels, drawer location and pocket size, drug package size, and drug usage patterns to setup new loads in a manner that ensures safe drug storage, minimizes medication errors (i.e. avoidsside-by-side storage of look-alike and sound-alike drugs), reduces stock-outs and subsequent refills.Replenishes stock-outs in a timely manner.
Demonstrates proficiency in a cross-functional areas of the department, including (but not limited to) IVAdmixture, Purchasing and Inventory, Operating Room Satellite, Pediatrics, or Investigational Drug Service.Performs necessary calculations and drug product manipulation, dilution, or compounding to accuratelyrepackages and label unit dose oral solids/liquids and injectables according to policy and regulatorystandards. Compounds sterile, extemporaneous and injectable medications using aseptic technique andinfection control procedures. Perform/check all necessary calculations to accurately preparechemotherapy/antineoplastic products following safety guidelines, OSHA regulations, industry standards anddepartmental policy. Appropriately handles and disposes of all chemotherapy trash and waste. Operatesand troubleshoots all equipment/hardware/software applications within technical specifications anddepartment policy. Accurately documents all required manufacturing and billing information related tocompounding/admixture.
Keeps the pass-thru refrigerator IVADD bins full to their par levels as observed at designated times by a pharmacists (Exceeds - Routinely QS's the bins more often than the scheduled times.)
Responds to nursing or physician or other requests via telephoneor in person and appropriately manages, triages, or ensuresfollow-up (i.e. Medication delivery or question answered) in atimely manner to ensure accurate and safe medication delivery.
High school diploma required. Successful completion of academic or military pharmacy technician training course and certification by the national Pharmacy Technician Certification Board (PTCB) strongly preferred at time of hire. PTCB certificate required within 6 months of start date. College degree desirable.
One year experience as a hospital pharmacy technician or equivalent preferred. Experience as a retail pharmacy technician and academic training or experience in other health related fields, laboratory sciences or pharmaceutical sciences also considered.
Current registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Connecticut as outlined by the Department of Consumer Protection.
Must be registered or eligible for registration as a Pharmacy Technician in the State of Connecticut as outlined by the Department of Consumer Protection. Proficiency in mathematical calculations; accuracy; problem solving; attention to detail; knowledge of computer applications including word processing and spreadsheets; ability to learn quickly in a fast-paced environment; ability to learn or perform pharmaceutical compounding, repackaging and labeling including manipulation of raw drug products using appropriate technique: ability to work with computer and technology equipment including the ability to perform basic troubleshooting functions. Must be able to prioritize competing demands, work independently, show flexibility and teamwork. Demonstrate good communication skills to customers and team members.
Employee will be expected to work mandatory on-call shifts.
